The White Hart is a privately owned family run free house and restaurant offering good quality wines, ales and spirits combined with a menu, of locally sourced and selected food. The menu consists predominantly of traditional home cooked food with a specials board offering further choices that may be in season. The menu is designed to suit all tastes and budgets. Please be aware that all food is freshly cooked to order.
The White Hart welcomes children. Dogs are welcome in the public bar area and garden. The pub is a popular venue for walkers enjoying the surrounding countryside and the excellent network of footpaths.
Records have been found dating back to 1760 showing a Public House on this site, the original pub occupied the front bar area and the small section around the bar with an outhouse. Today the pub has been extended to include the restaurant and summer room.
The extensive views from the restaurant, summer room and patio are some of the most beautiful in Sussex, and give a large sweeping panorama of the Vale of Ashburnham immortalised by the painter William Turner (1775 – 1851) in his painting of the same name in 1816, a watercolour painted in the romanticist style. The painting was commissioned as part of a series by local eccentric MP John (“Mad Jack”) Fuller. Fullers’ intention was for Turner to paint a record of the county. Although 13 paintings were commissioned, only 6 were published in Part 1 – “Views of Sussex” 1820. Today the painting hangs in the British Museum London.
The gardens and local area are a haven for wildlife and frequent visitors include robins, wrens, blackbirds, barn owls, tawny owls, finches, numerous butterflies and our most popular visitors, roe deer. Slowly the gardens are becoming established with many unusual plant specimens being grown including a large specimen of the Australian Tree fern Dicksonia Antarctica, and the giant Echium piniana from the Canary islands (if you would like seeds or a cutting of a particular plant in the garden then please ask and we will try
and accommodate requests where possible). The gardens also contain children’s play area {including climbing frames also swings, a slide some monkey bars and more} and BBQ area which is popular on summer evenings.
The premises, restaurant or summer room are available for private functions and are popular for birthdays and other family celebrations and corporate events. 2008 saw our first wedding, on a beautiful summer’s day allowing the wedding party and guests to enjoy a meal, evening buffet and fantastic pictures of their special day in the garden with panoramic views.
Throughout the year we have numerous events including a vintage car rally, classic bike rally and themed evenings often including a meal and entertainment e.g. St Patricks’ day and Chinese New Year – it is advisable to book a table as these events prove extremely popular. For details of forthcoming events or to book a table, please ask a member of staff, further details of events can be found on our website www.whitehartnetherfield.com
