Modafinil is a drug used to treat sleep problems and improve brain function. It is in a group of medicines called “wakefulness-promoting medications” because it helps people who get too sleepy during the day stay awake.
In the 1970s, a French researcher named Michel Jouvet developed a drug to help people with narcolepsy. After it did well in clinical tests, the US Food and Drug Administration gave it the brand name Provigil in 1998 so it could be used to treat this condition. The sleep disorder treatment was cleared in 2003 for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
Today, Modafinil is often suggested as the first treatment for the sleep problems listed above because it is safe and has a low chance of side effects. However, healthy people usually take it without a prescription to improve their brain function and, in turn, their output. Researchers at the universities of Oxford and Harvard called it the “world’s first safe, smart drug'” . Unlike some other “smart drugs,” Modafinil’s benefits don’t cause sudden drops in energy when they wear off.
There are two doses of Modafinil: 100 mg and 200 mg. It can only be used by people at least 17 years old. Even though it is usually safe, it shouldn’t be used on people with certain health problems. Before starting treatment with the drug, it is best to talk to a doctor.
